This is about the Kilimanjaro mountain in Tanzania, Africa and its height. The first person to climb it was Hans Clau and he did so in 1848. He came down from the mountain on January 12th, 1860 after climbing to a height of 5,850m (19,610ft). It was not until 1892 that Edward Whymper became the first person to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro by using oxygen tanks clipped to his back and later using a zig-zag route below Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19:62) above sea level. This is the highest point of Africa. Hermann Buhl, a Swiss mountaineer who died in 1964, was the first European to reach the top of Kilimanjaro wearing boxing gloves. There are rumours that, had he not traded his climbing boots for fishing rods to make some money before setting out on his expedition, Buhl may have reached the top in 1912 in less than 100 hours. The mountain is also known as "Kibo" in Swahili (meaning 'to wander'). The mountain's peak (reached by most climbers), is estimated at between 5,710 metres (18,572 feet) and 5,850 metres (19,560 feet). Tanzanian Shillings are used to spend money in Tanzania. The Tanzanian Shilling is approximately one part per million of gold.Yes, Kilimanjaro stands out because it is snow-capped even though it is so close to the equator. There are many theories as to why this mountain has snow on top of it, but none have been proven either true or false. One theory states that because the upper part of the mountain receives more moisture due to its location above clouds, ice forms every night even during the dry season which then turns into snow if it's cold enough. Another theory is that when the mountain is buried in snow, water vapor condenses on the permanent ice cap which covers 90% of its summit. On March 6, 2016, an Ethiopian Airlines Antonov An-148 crash led to the deaths of over 150 people after it crashed into Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak during a storm. The crash killed over 100 people with over 50 injured.Okubo is known for these seven summits - Shira, Kibo, Mawenzi, Marangu and Rongai. The town is known as "Gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro" due to its location as the starting point of many climbs.According to legend, a hunter named Kilemanjaro saw a strange creature he had never seen before and was so astounded that he asked his colleagues what it was. He was told that this strange creature had no name and they decided to name him after the mountain since they all were present at Mount Kilimanjaro's peak at the time they were naming the strange creature. Thus, it became known as Mt. Kilimanjaro. cfa1e77820
